In memoriam
Prof. G. Rajagopal, formerly Professor and Head, Department of Biochemistry, Rajah Muthiah Medical college Annamalainagar, Annamalai University, passed away on 12th November 2021, after a brief illness.
Prof. G. Rajagopal was born in Kottayam, Madras Providence(undivided India) in 1937. He completed his postgraduation (MSc) in Biochemistry from the University of Baroda and PhD degree from University of Madras. He held academic positions in many reputed institutions namely JIPMER, Pondicherry, AIIHPH, Calcutta, Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Annamalainagar, BPKIHS, Dharan, Nepal. In 2003 he continued to contribute his academic pursuits as Professor of Biochemistry at Dr. Kamakshi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research and as Senior Biochemist at the Dr Kamakshi Memorial Hospital. He was actively involved in various academic and administrative activities relating to medical education through IABMS and served as the award committee member of IABMS till his last day before brief illness.
Prof. G. Rajagopal was a teacher and researcher of the highest order. He has published over 75 research papers and reviews and authored 5 books in Medical Biochemistry. The meticulous manner in which he prepared and delivered his lectures has been widely acclaimed by all his students across four decades, who still remember him for his extraordinary abilities.
He joined Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists (IABMS) in 1993 and was awarded Fellowship Title. He was the President of IABMS during Nov 2001 to Nov 2003. Prof G. Rajagopal has several awards to his credit at international and national level. He has instituted Dr Leela Krishnamurthi memorial award for research by under graduate medical students and Prof Sundaram Subramaniam memorial oration award in IABMS. He was elected as the Editor-in-Chief of Biomedicine, in 2009 when he brought international status to the journal.
Prof. G. Rajagopal was a thorough gentleman and an extremely humble human being. Despite his monumental achievements, his humility and dedication needs a special mention. He will be dearly remembered by all his students, colleagues and members of IABMS as an affectionate person of integrity, honesty and sincerity and who gave his best to his everyone around him till the last day. The fraternity of Biochemistry and the Indian Association of Biomedical Scientist has lost one of its stalwarts. Prof. Rajagopal leaves behind his bereaved wife and a daughter who is well established in life.
